How to eat a gyros
If you ask for a knife and fork with your gyros, our head chef will smile and say: “No, no — this is street food.” A gyros is made to be eaten with your hands, standing, walking, or on a lawn in the sun.
How to do it
- Keep the paper on. It holds the gyros together and keeps your fingers clean.
- Eat from the top. Take the first bite where the filling is.
- Peel the paper down a few centimetres at a time.
- Hold it slightly tilted, so the tzatziki or spread does not run out the bottom.
- Napkins are part of it. A little sauce on the cheek belongs here.
The fries — in the bread or on the side?
In Greece the fries go inside the gyros, just like at The Fat Greek. If you take a combo, you also get a portion of crisp fries and a homemade dip on the side.
First-date tip
A gyros can be messy. Share the fries first, then take the gyros when the ice is broken. And if you are going to kiss afterwards, skip the extra tzatziki.
